Cervical Screening
CERVICAL Screening Awareness Week June 20-26. Cervical screening is a free health test that helps prevent cancer of the cervix (neck of the womb). In the past, it was called a smear test.
It checks for a virus called HPV and for abnormal changes on the cervix. All GP Surgeries are back up and running with cervical screening.
WHO IS INVITED TO THE SCREENING
Anyone who has a cervix and is:
-
Aged 25-64
-
Registered as a female with a GP surgery
-
If you identify as LGBT+ it’s still important
HOW OFTEN DOES THIS HAPPEN:
-
You might be invited every 2,3 or 5 years
HOW TO TAKE CONTROL AND MAKE IT GO WELL:
● If you are feeling nervous or worried, tell your nurse. They will give you the right support.
● You can ask for someone else from the practice team to support you during your appointment.
• If you are ok wearing a skirt or dress it makes things easier for you
• You get a paper sheet to cover yourself
• If lying on your back is tricky, you can lie on your side
• You can ask for a smaller speculum (this is the tool used to view the cervix)
• Book an appointment when you are not on your period
• Remember, it is your choice whether to have cervical screening
